Alice Wylie’s collection “Knotted” is a contemporary womenswear catwalk collection constructed from Nautical knots. Her research was taken at Coventry canal; has been linked to her City of Culture 2021 successful application of sustainability in deprived areas of the city. Making an effort to be more environmentally conscious everyday is of great importance to Alice. She believes there is a constant desire to be sustainable as there has been a shift in the fashion industry. All her fabrics were sourced in Paris and are designer off-cuts.
Inspired by “The Void” WGSN AW 20/21 trend which explores the artistic theory of “what’s not there is more important from what is there”. The knots and portholes reflect the trend and create those unusual gaps, creating that in-between void. Alice has demonstrated the experimental process of the knots by continuing to incorporate the knots into the garments. The most challenging aspect of her collection was balancing the weight of the sculptural knots, as they developed from flat shapes into 3D artistic sculptural accessory garments, that create volume and depth.
Alice’s garments are very simple and are not statements until put together with the knots, but this enhances the wearability aspect of her collection. Overall, Alice’s collection of simple but yet bold shapes create voluminous silhouettes through her intricate knots.
