Fabiola Soavelo recently graduated with a Masters in Fashion Design from Parsons in New York city, and is now based in London.
Her design journey is influenced by her Swiss-Malagasy heritage. Her work provides a unique perspective on her African cultural heritage and questions social norms on body perception through intricate silhouettes inspired by science fiction.
Soavelo's work speaks to the intricate web of human relationships and evokes a deep sense of cultural nostalgia.
During her time at Parsons, she refined her design style, leading to the creation of her 'Unsettling Fihavanana' collection. Drawing on her Swiss-Malagasy background, she blends the minimalism of Swiss culture with the rich historical and natural essence of her Malagasy heritage. Digging into her personal memories also led her to question how the colonial heritage of Madagascar has profoundly shaped collective memories.
