Miki Ogu and Mai Sudo are fashion designers based in Tokyo, Japan. Stunning costume collection collaboration must have been featured in the recent March issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK. Individually they are strong designers but they truly believe that ‘the era of individuals is over and the way forward is to be collaborative’. We had a pleasure to discover the great duet throughout the conversation.

What inspired you to collaborate and create the garment pieces since you were students?

We used to challenge fashion contest together when we were student.
Through this experience, we felt much joy by sharing ideas, and we noticed the discovery that I have never come up with if I were solo. At the same time, we are making garment pieces as a team.
This world have so many problems we think that the era of individuals is over, now the era of collaboration and helping each other to make some new fashion is on.

What ideas do you guys share with each other which compliments and improves the collection pieces?

After deciding the theme and designs of the collection, we usually get to creating. On the way of designing some pieces, we often share pros and cons , and we confirm how they are matching with the theme and the actual pieces. After that, we are trying to improve and change the designs to create the final outcome that will satisfy ourselves, and keep sharing and adopting each other’s peculiar ideas into one piece . That’s most important things for us!

Addressing the environmental issues by using the waste materials to create this collection. Could you elaborate more on how you create such fun fashion and take care of the planet at the same time?

Environmental problems are the biggest problem in fashion. We have started to suffer from the difficulties to create new things in this environment . As students, what we could do easily is to make even a little use of waste material into the products. Making the best use of the fabrics from previous work, and old cushions, we created an entire collection. It's about recycling something that's already in place and giving it a new life. But we have to select the recycled materials carefully, so not to go too far off from image of theme.

As your latest collections is called Added Plant’, what inspired the idea behind this collection?

We decided to embody society full of human desires into this collection.
We were inspired by the life of the flower that wants to grow in no matter how bad the environment is. People ignored consideration for other organisms and environmental degradation, so we imagined creating this collection like the flower that is growing up even though the pollution is out there.

Could you elaborate more about your design’s philosophy and how do you turn it into sustainable fashion?

We think fashion is not only about wearing the completed clothes.
We think our definition of fashion is to design underlining how material come into being or how creator put thoughts into the products. To do this ,we need to think deeply about the clothes background, we shall select the materials, and have to be considerable of the environment in order to create the new fashion.
