Mafalda’s collection, “Desert Decadence”, is heavily inspired by fabric manipulation techniques such as pleating and smocking, alongside embelishment and beading. This particular project explores the pleats formed in nature and how those can be translated with different fabrics. Transforming these shapes into feminine silhouettes. For Mafalda, nature represents calmness, a place where you can center your mind, which has inspired the symmetry in the garments.
Having been inspired by natural shapes, Mafalda started developing draping techniques by merging different fabrics such as silk dupion, satin, tulle and soft jersey. The different textures represent a forever changing enviroment surrounding all of us. She chose to develop smocking techniques with a range of different fabrics put together by patchwork. This patchwork was inspired by the garments seen in the desert and their need for quick mending.
Inspired by Madame Gres and Christophe Josse, Mafalda decided to modernize their shapes, translating them into exaggerated flares and volumous drapes. When developing her designs, Mafalda used box pleats to create volume while keeping parts of the garment fitted to the body. The use of soft fabrics such as silk, helps create floaty and delicate shapes that translate the state of mind you delevop after spending time surrounded by the quietness of nature.
The collection has an undeniable luxury feel and a feminine silhouette with experimental techniques and a modern edge. Each piece is a combination of different fabrics and textures that together create an elegant collection.
