Child’s Play: by building miniature scenes, encased within baking tins, Mairi Gillies has given physical form to intangible childhood memories.

The miniature scenes pull the textures, colour and form out from within her ‘child’s eye’. Gathering visual information from the inspiration point of playing in the garden as a child; the infantile imagination running wild, with a distorted sense of scale and surrealism.

Weaving small scale samples, identifying the colours, textures and shapes of the miniature scenes encased within baking tins.

Through weaving small scale test samples, Mairi was able to identitfy a colour and material palette. Using the bold colours and textures found within her miniature scenes and utilising yarn from industry waste.

With her colour palette and materials in mind, Mairi created small scale studies of each fabric in her collection before moving in to weave in large scale.
