Juntao’s Influenced by the masterpieces of Van Gogh, Picasso, Botticelli, Da Vinci, and others, designer Marian McGrady explores the theme of art forgery in her graduation collection. Her aim is simple, yet not simply achieved: to unite fashion and those masterpieces in a harmonious and attractive way.

Shades of blue, yellow, pink and white dominate the collection, and Marian uses stitching, painting and other techniques to express her passion for detail and design, and flowing and draped materials are used to imbibe her work with airiness or to create a new silhouette.Prints created by Marian arise from her own, masterpiece-influenced sketches, drawings and painting.

In the case of the fabric used in the piece inspired by Botticelli’s angel, Marian paints directly on organza of pure silk, but for other printed pieces she may digitally manipulate her sketches drawings, and paintings. Her detailed work is also expressed by her fine needlework in the pieces that spring from the sunflowers of Van Gogh and the Scream of Edvard Munch. Marian’s work harnesses the beauty and greatness that is integral to the works of the masters to leverage her own skills and creativity.

Marian uses her own patterns to produce cuts similar to some that were popular in the 19th century. At that time the world was becoming more industrialised, and the notion of what comprised “art” was changing. Elements, such as puffed sleeves, corsets and long pants-skirts are seen in the collection, and individual outfits are embellished and finished by unique, complimentary accessories, including handbags and painted socks..
