For her final collection, Mary Grace De Vera’s design process is initiated by looking closely at her gathered primary research of objects, of which is used to inspire the colour palette and inform various types of contrasting yarn choices that are reminiscent of these objects.

Mary Grace De Vera utilises drawing, mark-making, photography and collage to combine different elements of interest each object has focussing on texture and surface. Her sketchbook research shows contrasts of shiny and matte, transparent and opaque and soft and hard.

Mary Grace De Vera’s warp base combined of silk organzine and merino wool has been hand dip-dyed and meticulously set up on a dobby loom which has allowed her to experiment with different techniques such as seersucker, pleats, pique, felting and shrinking.

Design developments of yarn windings are done in order for Mary Grace De Vera to visuaully represent and help realise her designs before actually weaving them onto the loom. She takes inspiration from her research and beautifully balances colour and texture while also using fine and delicate yarns.

Mary Grace De Vera’s final collection, Object Security, is visualised within luxury Spring/Summer ready-to-wear womenswear. With yarn choices such as silk organzine, merino wool, lurex, cello and donated silk, these woven fabrics are suitable within this area of the market.
