Meiling Ma studies on the Jewellery and Metal MA Programme at the Royal College of Art. Her work centres on the transformation of traditional Chinese culture through contemporary visual expression. Her current collection – ‘Weaving Memories’ - focuses on extracting elements of traditional Chinese architectural styles and translating these through contemporary ideas. Meiling is presently designing body installation pieces.

These combine the use of traditional Chinese bamboo-weaving techniques and her research, which draws on the wisdom of traditional folk art. Her pieces emphasise not only the performative in poetic ways, but also explore and discuss the relationship between architectural structures and the body. She also refers to the fact that many traditional architectural forms are gradually disappearing from the ever-modernising cities in China. This series of works aims to celebrate traditional Chinese aesthetics and bring new cultural awareness to them.
