Ebenezer Ako-Adjei, Edward Akufo-Addo, Joseph Boakye Danquah, Kwame Nkrumah, Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey and William Ofori Atta formed the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC). This was the first political party with a Ghanaian origin in the gold coast and Ghana. The big six fought for the independence of Ghana from British colonial rule. March 6 1957 marks the declaration of independence by Prime Minister Kwame Nkrumah. This made Ghana the first sub-Saharan African country to achieve independence from British colonial rule.
