‘Sleepless’ is a collection of woven textiles initially inspired by Molly’s own experience with a lack of sleep. The pieces explore the lights in the pitch-black nights and empty streets outside aiming to capture both the sense of quiet in the early hours of the morning and the out-of-focus, hazy feeling of lying awake as you become more and more tired trying to drift off.

Taking photos at night, exploring insomnia cures and how colour affects our mood plus finding ways of distorting objects to relay a blurry, sleepless state led Molly to use the ikat technique as an extension of her research. No colour is stand-out bright or intrusive however still hold an intensity and richness to relay the depth of tone in the night sky and our surroundings with her yarn and colour choices. How the street lights, for example, stand out against the almost black of the sky has been a central visual when designing final outcomes in terms of colour placement and proportion.

With the blurry, sometimes obscuring nature of the traditional Ikat technique, Molly has designed a series of fabrics that would reflect this feeling as well as provide a sense of calm or distraction through interactions with a minimalist colour palette or tactile surface.
