Omaia Jallad’s graduate collection was inspired by the beauty of the decaying flower, as a natural documentation of the passage of time, and Art Nouveau as a new art that was inspired by the delicacy of nature. Trying to sustain old and tradition crafts techniques, Omaia Jallad has focused on using hand knit and crochet methods that she has learnt from her grandma as the main process in her work. Through her collection she aims to create a personal narrative, where her work becomes a sort of time travel to a timeless past, within a fast paced present.

During her process, Omaia has focused on finding a way to merge the manmade and organic to create a contrast in her work, which embodies a set of temporal and historic paradoxes. The most important thing for the development of her work, is to keep questioning the possibilities of her designs, and allowing her curiosity lead her process. Creating collages using her own experimentation, found imagery, and objects has allowed her to keep developing, and not stoping at a single idea. Each design in her work has lead the other, as there is no start or end to her process. She is mainly intrigued by the beauty of the delicacy of the nature and made her main focus to mimic that in her designs.

The collection has a unified theme, however, each of her final designs describes a different angle from her inspiration. Mainly she has looked at layering as an essential part of her work, where she observed in detail Art Nouveau architecture and the swirling staircases, as well as the layers of the petals of a flower, and finding a connection between both. Her work is a narrative to the passage of time, where she has made it essential to incorporate fresh flowers in her work, and leaving them to dry, where it becomes a live documentation of the passage of time, and a performance, where nature will take its course, and she, as a designer has no control over them.
