My name is Phoebe Potter and I am a soon to be graduate from BA Fashion at the University of Lincoln, a creative experience of which I have absolutely loved! I hope to continue my studies post grad and have applied to Central St Martins with a hope to focus on textiles within fashion.

My final collection named SEW OVER IT! is highly illustrative and print based visualising the anxious thoughts I face when sewing and pattern cutting. These fears had started to become ‘monsters in my head’ of which to take control of I creatively illustrated and combined my fears into my garments, generating canvases to hold my illustrations and prints, projecting the overwhelming scale my thoughts amount to through the medium of prints. I have drawn sewing machine monsters, moody princesses and pattern cutting tools to give off an aura of childhood dreaming and dress up to escape the chaos of the mind.

I myself have always had a strong sense of what I will and will not wear, refusing to wear trousers at aged 3 preferring long dresses that I could twirl around in, something of which I wanted to incorporate into my Final collection. Drawing and illustrating provides me with escapism and enjoyment of which I wanted this element to come across in my collection. The fabulous Grayson Perry dressed as his alter ego Claire is the silhouette inspiration and muse behind my project, therefore I designed impactful trapeze silhouettes, generating volume and high intensity printed chaos. The narrative that runs within Grayson Perry’s creative outlets also has continually inspired me within my own practise as I draw and aim to generate an intriguing narrative within clothes. Grayson Perry once said, “Play seriously, insignificant doodles may turn into great ideas” and it is this quote that I kept in mind when illustrating and playing around creating prints within my development in order to generate a strong and impactful narrative.
