Qi Rui Siew’s collection explores the boundary between fashion and art, inspired by the culture of Singapore. Chinese knots, batik print, handmade Chinese opera headdresses, handmade wooden clogs and sari prints are elements found in the collection. Non-binary clothing and the notion that skirts can be worn by everyone are discussed in this collection.

Throughout the progress of the collection, Qi Rui had the core idea of using particular materials to mould clothing. This was further developed through discovering the idea of fashion artefacts, which encouraged her to mould clothing on a model, thus leading to multiple pieces made entirely out of deconstructed Chinese knots. The idea that fashion is art in itself encouraged Qi Rui to think out of the box and not restrict herself to opinions that design should look like a certain piece of clothing.

Majulah Singapura is a collection that showcases intricate hand sewing, well-made clothing pieces and the engineering of clothes using rope and tubing. It has textiles surfaces that have been developed over time and incorporates welding and woodworking alongside traditional sewing for its pieces.
