TEATUM JONES FW17 'THE BODY'
17th February 2017

On early Friday morning our team attended the opening show of the Fall/Winter 2017 London Fashion Week - the Teatum Jones catwalk show - the fashion lovechild of designers Rob Jones and Cat Teatum. As we know, fashion gets political at times as was clearly Teatum Jones' aim with this collection. This time the models walked the runway to a mix of Meryl Streep's Golden Globe speech critiquing Donald Trump blended with music.

Other than political messages, Teatum Jones’ objective was to deconstruct preconceived ideas of what the perfect body should be. They challenged the idea of physical perfection, deconstructing it to its core and proposing a new unconventional yet equal beauty. The newest collection called ‘The Body’ was inspired by the work of the german artist Hans Bellmer in the 1930s and his famous life-sized deformed dolls, which he created as a rejection of the German Nazi Party’s ideal body. The brand took inspiration from this direct rejection of the ideal body and confront our modern relationships with our bodies.

Diversity was sought out in order to promote body acceptance not only within the shapes and patterns of the garments, but even through their model casting. You could find two models confidently walking down the runway in garments specifically tied around their missing body parts - celebrating their disability.

Oversized coats, unusual cut-outs and strapped waistlines have once again dominated as the signature pieces, using the garments to optically exaggerate the skin under it and fuse to the body as if it was a second layer of skin.

Patterns and textures followed the notion of imperfect beauty and Bellmer’s doll silhouettes. Being inspired by asymmetric geometry, Teatum Jones have subsidised soft curves with awkward imperfect squares.

The colour palette of the FW17 collection took us back in time before nudes and pastels, offering us fresh wet, shiny black & white with an abundance of neutral grey and silver combined with strong post box red, yellow and blue. A strong contrast was achieved through the brand's unique and well though-out collaboration with Christian Louboutin. The red soles enhanced the design pieces and created an optical line as the models made their way through the catwalk.

Teatum Jones is a brand to keep an eye on for their innovative way of tackling social topics surrounded by stigma and conquer them with art and fashion.
