Tsinghua University is famous for producing the top graduates in China. The Central Academy of Arts & Design was established in 1956 to meet the demand for art design professionals. Initially as an independent school, the Central Academy of Arts & Design merged with the University and became the Academy of Arts & Design in November 1999.

The Academy of Arts & Design at the university appeared twice in the top 60 best design colleges in the world by Business Weekly of the United States. Tsinghua University is known for its excellence in teaching and research fields in art and design in China. The academy emphasizes the combination of theory and practice, heritage and innovation, teaching and production.

Students and lecturers have won many awards in exhibitions and design contests internationally. The academy received first place in a national performance appraisal involving over 1,000 design colleges in China. During the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games the academy played a great role in the designs of the event and also in the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China.
