Humans are naturally unable to go through the four phases of metamorphosis as insects do - egg, larva, pupa and adult. Metamorphosis, also known as metamorphic phenomena, refers to the adaptation to ever-changing environments by adopting different life forms for survival.
Graduating from the Queensland University of Technology in Australia two years ago, designer Jason Ying has been working for a year to perfect his skills in pattern marking and sewing. He is obsessed with structure and form and has incorporated his curiosity for deconstruction and metamorphosis into his creations. In his exploration and imagination of the differences between humans and other species, he attempts to construct the diversity of evolution by using silhouettes, detailed joints and colours.
“I am an attentive, radical, and innovative designer who is always attracted to avant-garde aesthetics and passionate about deconstructing and combining elements to create an innovative and playful silhouette. I want to work in the fashion industry to express my emotions through styling and creating a fashion piece that gives me a sense of joy and freedom. Creative and visual communication are inseparable for me, and this combination could express my thoughts and convey something that cannot be expressed in words to others. Besides, I could get some satisfaction and design motivation when my creation is appreciated and recognized by others. My design style is unbound, so I can combine interesting and hidden elements worldwide. My design ideas and inspirations usually come from mistakes and failure, because the wrong combination has unlimited possibilities, which means I can get endless inspirations from there. Also, by merging avant-garde silhouette and versatile design, I can preserve the traditional craft of fabric making and culture in the industry. Sometimes, I combine traditional elements from Hong Kong in my designs, which can be meaningful, memorable, and valuable to the social base. For example, the vintage handmade toys of my generation resonate with people. In conclusion, I want to bring diversity and innovation to the industry.”
