A Cape Town–based jewellery designer whose work draws deeply from the natural beauty of South Africa’s Western Cape. Inspired by the extraordinary biodiversity of the Cape Floral Kingdom, locally known as Fynbos, his collection celebrates lesser-known native plants by sculpting their distinctive forms in recycled silver and pairing them with wood from trees indigenous to Southern Africa. Each piece highlights the intricate shapes and structures of these plants, demonstrating that their beauty can be recognised even when rendered in a single material.
Working from sketches and field photographs taken during walks on Table Mountain, each botanical form is carefully developed into a sculptural wax model before being cast in silver. The silver elements are then precisely mounted onto wooden backplates without adhesives, allowing the natural grain of the wood and the metal sculpture to complement one another in a harmonious composition. Through this thoughtful craftsmanship, the collection not only celebrates the visual richness of Fynbos but also draws attention to its ecological vulnerability, as many species face increasing pressure from urban expansion and agriculture.
Originally trained as a paediatrician, he spent 25 years running his own medical practice in Cape Town before retiring in 2019 and embarking on a new creative chapter as a jewellery designer. Encouraged by an established South African goldsmith, he began pursuing jewellery design full-time, combining his long-standing interest in antiques, craftsmanship, and design history with a deep appreciation for skilled artisans. His work reflects both a respect for traditional craft and a personal journey from a life dedicated to care toward one devoted to artistic expression.
