Jiaxin Wu highly inspired by the world around us usually recording every little thing which inspires her in order not to forget the valuable essence. As part of our Global Young Talent in the November issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK, we had the pleasure of speaking to womenswear designer representing the ancient oriental culture style within the collection designs.

1. What made you decide to focus on womenswear line?

When I was young, I was instilled with some information about fashion design from various channels, which influenced me imperceptibly. I'm interested in it and I firmly chose this major and will be engaged in this profession in the future. I was impressed by an article I read in junior high introduced several top Chinese fashion designers, such as Jason Wu, Vera Wang, Anna Sui, Jimmy Choo from their childhood to their later achievements in detail, which gave me a great shock, and I felt that I had an indissoluble bond with fashion design from then on.

2. What inspires you the most while creating your garments?

Most of all my life experience. I have the habit of recording everything which can inspire me. I will record any fun elements in my mobile memo anytime, anywhere, and keep recording all my sudden inspiration. Then before I start designing a collection, I look through the previous memos or albums to make my brain work. All qualitative changes are based on quantity, likewise, good work come from life, so any details that may inspire me cannot escape.

3. What affiliations would you desire to depict within your designs?

In my collection, it’s like trying to tell a story of a series of clothes. From my inspiration sources to research, there will be a theme with many small elements. Each set of clothing should carry one or more specific elements which are like chapters in a novel. But in the end, they can all be linked to a circle, returning to the main theme.

4. How would you describe your role as a fashion designer?

I think the job of a fashion designer is leading people towards beauty. Good aesthetics and continuous creativity are the necessary abilities for an excellent fashion designer to find out the beautiful things that people ignore in life, which can appear in an exciting form again with their creation. Clothing is a carrier of presenting beauty, which has already surpassed its original function and given new existence value by fashion designers.

5. How did your nationality background influence your designs?

The oriental culture has influenced me the most since I was a child. All fresh traditional culture like opera, paper cutting and embroidery are reflecting the uniqueness, beauty and mystery of the ancient oriental culture, which have been used in my designs many times and helped me to establish my own unique design style.
