Prestine, purposeful and deeply personal are adjectives Julian Scarry would describe his design aesthetic with. Scarry graduated from Istituto Marangoni´s BA Fashion Design Womenswear course in September 2021, winning the prize for the Best Collection and Student of the Year.

He focuses on innovation involving print design and cut. By simplifying his cuts to only rectangles and circles, his unique prints in predetermined shapes are hand pleated. This creates size inclusive designs due to the fabrics elasticity, all with severely reduced waste, due to the simplified shape of the pattern.

“Utopian” is an escapist exploration of freedom within restriction. It is an ode to resilience in ever-changing times and a direct reflection of Scarry´s experience with isolation, restriction and all the coping mechanisms adopted along the way. The element of transformation is explored through a unique technique of hand-pleating split-image prints, allowing the garments to transform, shift and animate.

Over 35 authentic prints revisit famous escapist works of art and the relationship between artists and their muses. The language of subliminal messaging through pose in art acts as a narrating subtext throughout the collection, whilst self-referential portraits express his emotions throughout the past year when the ability to paint his face was as close to true freedom as he could get. No matter how many restrictions Julian faced in the physical realm, Scarry´s escape to his personal Utopia granted him true creative satisfaction.
